Shenzhen Municipal Public Security Bureau was established in 1979 on the basis of the original Bao’an County Public Security Bureau. In the ten years thereafter, it developed from a section-level bureau into an assistant department-level bureau along with the economic and social development of Shenzhen. In July 1990, it set up threes sub-bureaus in Futian, Luohu and Nanshan. In 1992, Bao’an County was reorganized into Bao’an and Longgang Districts, and accordingly Bao’an and Longgang public security sub-bureaus were set up. In 1998, Yantian District was established, and Shatoujiao Public Security Sub-bureau was renamed as Yantian Public Security Sub-bureau. Shenzhen Municipal Public Security Bureau is a functional organization of the municipal government responsible for public security of the city. Its functions include enforcing the relevant laws, regulations and policies of the state, formulating relevant provisions and management measures based on the actual conditions of Shenzhen and supervising implementation of the same; investigating criminal cases of the city, controlling and cracking down various crimes (including serious crimes in economic sectors) and all activities sabotaging national security; taking charge of citywide patrol, social order, traffic, fire control, economic security, safekeeping, preliminary interrogation, guarding, and population, and immigration and emigration administration, and education, training and management of civil police; undertaking other assignments of the municipal CPC committee, municipal government and upper authority. 
　　 Its subordinate units include Luohu Public Security Sub-bureau, Futian Public Security Sub-bureau, Nanshan Public Security Sub-bureau, Yantian Public Security Sub-bureau, Shekou Public Security Sub-bureau, Bao’an Public Security Sub-bureau, Longgang Public Security Sub-bureau, Guangming Sub-bureau, Shenzhen Municipal Public Security Bureau Border Sub-bureau, Luohu Port Sub-bureau, Huanggang Port Sub-bureau, Airport Sub-bureau, Shekou Port Sub-bureau, Dayawan Sub-bureau, Public Traffic Sub-bureau, Dongsheng Sub-bureau and Forest Sub-bureau.
